Claude vs ChatGPT for business teams: what actually differs, as of September 2026.

How do Claude and ChatGPT compare, side by side?

On the decisions a team makes, the two are closer than the marketing suggests. The table summarizes what each vendor documents; the sections below add the detail.

Which is better for documents and files?

Both can now hand back a finished file rather than text you paste into one. The difference is mostly where the work lives.

Anthropic's help center describes Claude creating Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, Word documents, PowerPoint decks and PDFs in a conversation, on every plan. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports from instructions and attached source material, including native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides when Google Workspace is connected.

Claude also has Cowork, which works inside a folder on your computer that you approve, so a model or memo is edited in place rather than uploaded and downloaded. If your team's work is mostly files on disk, try both on the same real file before deciding. That test tells you more than any feature list.

Which handles long documents and large context better?

Claude publishes larger context windows for chat. As of this month, Anthropic's help center lists 1M tokens on paid plans for several current models and 500K for others. OpenAI publishes limits per plan and model, and its enterprise documentation says that text beyond the context window is searched and retrieved in relevant chunks rather than read whole.

In practice: if the job is reading a full lease file, a long contract set or a complete codebase at once, a larger window means fewer places where the model is working from excerpts. For most day-to-day questions, both are more than large enough.

How do connectors and MCP compare?

Both now speak MCP, the open protocol for connecting an assistant to live tools. Anthropic created it and in December 2025 donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation, a Linux Foundation fund that OpenAI co-founded, so neither vendor controls the standard. The difference is rollout and who can set it up.

Claude supports custom connectors over remote MCP on all plans, including free with a limit of one. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector for the organization and each person then signs in with their own credentials, so Claude sees only what that person can see. There is also a directory of ready-made connectors.

ChatGPT offers apps across common tools, and full MCP support with read and write actions through developer mode, in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces and also available to Plus and Pro accounts on the web. In a workspace, an admin enables developer mode, creates and tests the app, then publishes it to the workspace. Skills or custom GPTs: how do reusable workflows compare?

This area has converged. Claude Skills are folders with a SKILL.md file of instructions plus optional scripts and reference files, loaded when a task matches. Team and Enterprise admins can provision Skills to everyone. See Skills vs MCP for where they fit.

OpenAI now documents Skills in ChatGPT for Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu, built on the same open Agent Skills standard, so a well-written skill can move between products. OpenAI's help center also says custom GPTs are scheduled for retirement, with December 11, 2026 given for affected Enterprise workspaces, and that a GPT's instructions migrate into a Skill inside a plugin. Custom actions do not carry over in the migration and have to be rebuilt as connectors or MCP servers. If your team runs on custom GPTs, plan that migration now, whichever assistant you choose.

ChatGPT also has workspace agents, launched in April 2026 as a research preview for Business, Enterprise and Edu: agents a team builds, tests and shares, which can connect to apps, run on a schedule or work from Slack.

How do the agentic desktop features compare?

Both vendors now ship an assistant that carries out multi-step tasks, not just answers. They are packaged differently.

Claude Cowork reached general availability on paid plans for macOS and Windows in April 2026. It reads and writes files in folders you approve, uses connectors, Skills and plugins, and can run scheduled tasks. Anthropic also documents web and mobile access in beta. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude app, rolling out to Pro and Max first, then Team and Free, with at least 30 days' notice for Enterprise; existing chats, projects, connectors and Skills carry over.

OpenAI splits the same ground across several products. ChatGPT Work, announced in July 2026, is pitched as an agent that works across your apps and files and can stay with a project for hours. ChatGPT agent carries out tasks and asks for confirmation before high-impact actions. Workspace agents cover shared team automations, and the Codex desktop app for macOS and Windows runs longer agent tasks in parallel. Whichever you use, keep the scope narrow: one folder, one process, one person who reviews the output.

What about admin and data controls?

Both vendors state that business-plan data is not used to train their models by default. Anthropic's Privacy Center says inputs and outputs from commercial products such as Claude for Work are not used for training by default. OpenAI's business data page says the same for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise.

Both offer admin consoles, organization-level control over which connectors are allowed, and more governance on their enterprise tiers. Anthropic added role-based access controls, spend limits and usage analytics for Cowork on Enterprise. Compare the specific controls your IT or compliance team needs on each vendor's current plan page, not a summary like this one.

When is each the better pick, and should you run both?

Claude tends to fit teams whose work is long documents, file-heavy analysis, writing that must follow a house style, or custom connectors to their own systems. ChatGPT tends to fit teams already standardized on it, those who want shared agents running from Slack or on schedules, and those whose staff already use it personally.

Plenty of teams run both, and that is a reasonable answer. MCP servers and Skills increasingly work across the two, so the investment in your own workflows is not locked to one vendor. What matters more than the choice is how the tool is rolled out: one process at a time, with a person who owns the output.
