- If you use ChatGPT Enterprise, list your custom GPTs and flag the ones with custom actions before December 11.
- Review which agents hold access in your Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 admin center, and in Claude's admin settings if you are on Enterprise.
Meta launched Muse, a personal agent that acts across your own apps
What happened (September 8, 2026). Meta released Muse in the US on iOS, Android, the web and inside WhatsApp. It runs on a dedicated cloud computer with its own browser, connects to email, calendar and payments, and sends email, books travel and buys things, asking first on sensitive actions by default. Why it matters. Staff can now connect a work inbox or calendar to a free consumer agent in a few taps, outside any control the business has. Muse is also genuinely useful for an owner's own Facebook and Instagram posting.

Instinct raised $250 million while testers raised privacy concerns
What happened (August 24 and 26, 2026). Instinct, a personal assistant you text or call, raised a $250 million Series B co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark. Two days earlier testers reported an email sent without approval, inbox data used after access was revoked, and terms granting a perpetual license to user materials. It remains in private beta. Why it matters. It is a clear example of what to check before any agent touches business data: the permission list, what happens on disconnect, and the terms.
What to do. Before approving any agent, read its terms for data licenses and for authority to enter transactions on the user's behalf. Disconnect, then check whether it still acts.
OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs in favor of plugins and Skills
What happened (notice September 11; retirement December 11, 2026). OpenAI will retire custom GPTs in ChatGPT Enterprise on December 11, 2026, or February 11, 2027 with an approved deferral. New Enterprise GPT creation ended September 25. A migration tool converts a GPT's instructions into a Skill and its files into reference files inside a plugin. Why it matters. Any GPT that calls an outside system through a custom action will stop working unless it is rebuilt on a connector or an MCP server.

Claude Cowork and chat became one Claude app, and Claude in Chrome went GA
What happened (August 26 and September 16, 2026). Anthropic is merging Cowork into the main Claude app, rolling out to Pro and Max first with Team and Free to follow, and added Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. Separately, Claude in Chrome became generally available on all paid plans, with Enterprise admins able to limit it to approved domains. Why it matters. The agent features stop being a separate product someone has to find. That raises adoption and the need for rules at the same time.
What to do. Tell the team where Cowork went, and if you are on Enterprise, set the Chrome domain allowlist before rollout. See what Claude Cowork does.
Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5
What happened (September 22, 2026). Opus 5.5 is Anthropic's newest Opus model, available in the Claude apps and on the API through AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Anthropic says it costs about 40 percent less than Opus 5 on typical workloads and reworked how it writes. Source: Anthropic.
Why it matters. Teams paying for Opus through the API get a lower bill for the same work. Chat users mainly notice clearer writing.
What to do. If you run Claude through the API, test your prompts on Opus 5.5 and switch the model name once results hold. Chat users need do nothing.
OpenAI released GPT-6, starting with Astra and then Sol and Luna
What happened (September 3 and 22, 2026). OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra on September 3 as a limited preview, with ChatGPT paid tiers and the API following over the next days. On September 22 it added GPT-6 Sol, for everyday work, and GPT-6 Luna, a cheaper and faster model, priced well below the GPT-5.6 family released in July. Why it matters. Anything you built on the OpenAI API in the last year is probably paying more than it needs to, and the models behind ChatGPT's tools changed under your team's feet.
What to do. If you call OpenAI's API, re-run a small test set on GPT-6 Sol or Luna and compare cost and quality before switching. In ChatGPT, spot-check one recurring task your team relies on.
Claude for Small Business added workflows, and Claude got a marketplace for plugins
What happened (September 15, 23 and 25, 2026). Anthropic added 43 small-business workflows and 27 integrations including Xero, Zoho Books, Square, Gusto, HubSpot and Shopify, available on paid plans, plus free in-person workshops in ten US cities including Tampa. It then opened the Claude Marketplace for plugins, connectors and partner products, and made plugins, which package MCP connectors and Skills, the main way to extend Claude. Why it matters. Plugins are now the common unit on both Claude and ChatGPT. A connector to the tools a small business already runs is more likely to exist off the shelf.

The MCP specification went stateless
What happened (July 28, 2026). The 2026-07-28 revision of the Model Context Protocol removes sessions and the initialize handshake, adds cacheable tool lists, and deprecates dynamic client registration in favor of Client ID Metadata Documents. Protected servers must still publish OAuth protected resource metadata (RFC 9728). Roots, Sampling and Logging are deprecated with a twelve-month minimum window. Source: MCP blog.
Why it matters. Stateless servers are cheaper to host and scale. Servers and clients on older revisions will need upgrades over the next year. What is an MCP server? covers the basics.
What to do. Ask whoever runs your MCP servers which revision they support and when they will move.
Green Street made its MCP server generally available
What happened (August 11, 2026). Green Street clients can now query its research, market data, forecasts, sales comps and automated valuation model from corporate instances of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Source: PR Newswire.
Why it matters. It is another sign that commercial real estate data vendors will meet brokers inside the AI tools they use rather than only in their own portals.

Google Workspace added admin controls for agents
What happened (August 2026). An agent access management dashboard lets Workspace admins view and suspend agents, or revoke specific OAuth scopes such as Drive access for individual flows. Gemini data loss prevention can restrict what Drive content Gemini reaches, based on content conditions and labels. Source: Google Workspace blog.
Why it matters. Most small businesses on Workspace have never reviewed which agents hold OAuth access to their Drive.
What to do. Open the dashboard, review what has access, and suspend anything nobody can explain.
Microsoft announced Autopilot, an agent that runs recurring work in your tenant
What happened (September 25, 2026). Microsoft introduced a new Copilot with Home, Code and Autopilot. Autopilot is given a name, a role and a goal, then watches channels, follows up on threads and runs recurring work. Why it matters. Scheduled, unattended agents are arriving inside the Microsoft 365 tenant most businesses already pay for.
What to do. Nothing yet for most teams. Microsoft 365 admins should read the plugin and spending controls now, before staff start asking for access.

Ask each vendor or developer when their server and client support the new revision, and upgrade custom servers through the updated SDKs.
Are consumer AI agents safe to use for work?
Not with work accounts by default. Personal agents such as Muse and Instinct act on one person's accounts, outside the business's admin controls. Use them for the owner's own public tasks, and use a work agent the business administers for client data, shared files and team processes.
